APOLLO

Ferruginous Hawk (male)

ABOUT APOLLO

Apollo is eight years old and has been captive bred.

Apollo is very timid and aware of his surroundings; he does tolerate the company of his handler, but does not take kindly to new faces and experiences.  He was used as a flight demonstration bird in his earlier years and is now enjoying early retirement into breeding stock.

Like all male birds of prey, Apollo is approximately 1/3 smaller than his female partner Santana, however; he is more than capable of handling himself and is still considered the dominant of the two.

Apollo enjoys feeding on day old chicks, full-grown chicken heads and necks and black squirrels trapped on the property.

Like all Ferruginous Hawks, Apollo has very small feet in relation to his body, but don’t let that fool you, his feet and talons are very powerful and handlers use extreme caution when dealing with him.

Ferruginous Hawks have an approximate life span of 20 years in the wild: the greater majority perish within their first five years, the most crucial time being winter in their first year of life.

As a captive bird, Apollo will enjoy a healthy life, living well into his late 40’s, leaving all the worries of living in the wild behind. His current all-inclusive stay at Freedom Falconry is a welcomed daily retreat.
